Poets and Painters Night
SPW members selected one Prairie Art Alliance juried artist's piece from Gallery II and created their own piece of art - a poem - inspired by the painting or sculpture, that they then read at the PAA Gallery II in downtown Springfield on June 24, 2010. Talents merged for a unique and inspiring evening that included a poetry reading, art presentation, artist introduction, wine and hors d'oeuvres. Paintings and poems were displayed and for sale.

Why I Hate Your New Car
Susannah Sharpless, Indiana

i think i’d rather you were lying
than being honest

look at you: your hat is tinged with ashes
of days that have vanished with puffs of smoke
your stomach sags over your belt,
your head bends to the slightest gust of wind.
your car is clean. stop scrubbing it
in wide loops that eat themselves over and over

listen up: they locked a bleeding woman
in a cellar for days
piled up cash
and left her to suffocate

listen up: we’re lucky to be breathing

i feel sick. i ate gold
because it shone so pretty
and now my insides clank like chains

Below is a poem from the book:

Happiness

An August dawn and I walk into the misty yard
with corn for the squirrel feeder.  The near cry of the

pileated echoes wild a distant mate answers
from far within or beyond these woods as it has been

for centuries the fallen tree trunk dwindles yearly into
decaying leaves…the lone red wildflower startles me.

Twelfth Window

a pinecone birthed from charcoals

 - sipping silence. the empty red birdhouse

prays quietly, totters against

the blue. time never stops, they say

- the yellow of the house scoffs

we are no nomads here. heartbeat pounding

shells gently like an onion, the crinkling in

ear is nothing but the being of

unrest. the metallic sounds are perched

at bay, a shudder their finest demise

the song of the road lies stripped

in these stones, clay-red and

sulfured greens like blood veins

 - a hoax. my skin shivers

dark oil against water, and for the breaking of

a mirage, the water hiccups.

an eye is turned from the glaze

the falling of the olive-leaf, unheard.
